Nowadays farmers usually use quad bikes to go onto the fells. This is much easier than having to walk up.
When the sheep see the farmer coming on to the fell they know they are going to be fed. They come towards the farmer.

During February the sheep remain on the fells. However the sheep find
it difficult to live off grass alone in the winter so the farmer gives
them additional food, usually in the form of pellets. In this picture
the sheep are on the lower slopes and the farmer has placed a circle of
pellets on the ground which explains why the sheep have formed a circle.
